A national three-year minimum expiry for gift cards is one step closer after passing the first hurdle of federal parliament.
Losses from expired gift cards are estimated to cost Australians $70 million annually, with assistant treasurer Stuart Robert saying the new guidelines – beginning November, 2019 – would give both consumers and businesses clarity.
“Consumers will have the full benefit of the gift cards they receive,” he told the lower house on Wednesday.
